Initial Scotrail passenger figures for 2023-24 show that a record number of people used Leuchars railway station, exceeding the previous peak in 2018-19 by 90,000.
Over 700,000 passengers embarked from or disembarked at Leuchars, the majority of whom it can be assumed would be travelling to and from St Andrews; the station is after all marketed as Leuchars for St Andrews.
This has been achieved despite the reduction in commuter travel, meaning that there has been a significant increase in leisure travel to St Andrews since the risk of Covid-19 has receded.
This confirms what many of us already suspected, i.e. that when a line to St Andrews is finally opened there will be no shortage of passengers.
