Railway is 'Greener Option'

A reply in today’s St Andrews Citizen correspondence columns to last week’s letter points out that the bus service is clearly not enough to attract car-drivers, judging by the fact that there is regularly an overflow of up to 50 cars, and that the road equivalent of building less than 5 miles of track to the east coast main line is building dual carriageway as far as the trunk road network, 25 miles away, including at least 5 bypasses.

Coincidentally, an article in the same issue features the problems of parking at Leuchars Station including the large number of fines being imposed on motorists parking outwith the designated spaces. With motorists driving all the way from Dundee and Angus, the car-park fills up very early in the morning, leaving no designated spaces for anyone arriving later.

Fife Council has plans for another 100 spaces, and is seeking money from the Scottish Government to pay for these. However, with nearly 50 regularly parking along Station Road, plus those who have parked illegally, it is likely that it will not be long before we are back to the same situation. I would estimate that after 6 months there will again be frustrated motorists parking outwith the spaces and risking fines or leaving their vehicles along Station Road.
