'Hell to get to'

Earlier this year, the Financial Times covered the controversial issue of whether Turnberry should be re-admitted to the Open Championship circuit, which it last hosted in 2009. One of the obstacles is the Ayrshire venue's poor transport links which were described as making Turnberry 'hell to get to.'

The nearest railway station is five miles away at Girvan.

However, the FT observed that, 'Locals point out that St Andrews in Fife, the spiritual home of golf that has hosted the most Opens, has similar chokepoints and its train [sic] station, Leuchars, is five miles from the town.'

If, therefore, Turnberry's remoteness from the railway is enough to stymie its hopes of staging the Open again, what does that imply for St Andrews?
